2nd African Youth Rise Haji by Bike

Two young men from South Africa has a unique way to go on pilgrimage to the Holy Land. Over the past 8 months, they pedaled a bicycle from Cape Town, South Africa, up to Saudi Arabia to meet the pillars of Islam is to-5.

The two young men full of spirit that is Nathim Cairncross (28) and Imtiyaz Ahmad Haron (25). When he arrived at the Saudi border, admitted both very happy because it will realize his dream to pilgrimage.


"We ride from Cape Town to the Kingdom (Saudi Arabia) is an exhausting experience. We want to go this way so that we are ready to face the severity of experience in running the pilgrimage, "said Cairncross who worked as a city planner told Arab News by telephone. Both start the trip on his bicycle on February 7 alias 8 months ago. They were paddling through Botswana, Zimbabwe, Mozambique, Malawi, Tanzania, Kenya, Turkey, Syria and Jordan before reaching the Saudi border.

"This is our first pilgrimage. We can come to the pilgrimage by plane, but we want to travel on different roads, so we chose to use our bikes. Moreover, cycling is something that we liked most, "

They both had pedaled 80 km to 100 km per day and rested in tents or a mosque after evening. As soon as dawn approached, they went back to continue the journey.

Along the way, they met with people who are very nice and polite. In every place that is passed, people gave a warm welcome. Even when he knew the two young men going on pilgrimage, people are increasingly happy.

"Food was never a problem because these people offered us food. Of course, boring paddling all the way, especially as it passes through the mountains, "

Language is a big problem for both of them. Therefore, when it began to enter the Arab countries, they decided to learn a little Arabic, especially when traveling through Syria and Jordan.

"When we arrived at the Saudi border, security officials are very friendly when greeting and welcome us. They are also happy to know we have made the arduous pilgrimage to fulfill a dream, "

"We came up with a very small budget, and we found the people who offer local money to us and meet our needs,"

However, they did not experience serious problems during the trip through nine countries in many months. "What we did was change the tires and tubes, and mengepaskan pedal chain from time to time,"

When asked why they chose to ride a bike, Cairncross said, "It gives us many opportunities to meet and interact with different people in different countries as well."

Cairncross and Haron are students studying Islamic law and Sharia. "I joined a university and then completed the course of urban planning and now I work in construction,"

Both were unmarried and very hobby sport. Cairncross like windsurfing along the coast and sea, while Haron, likes kickboxing and mountain climbing. After the pilgrimage, they will return home via West Africa.
